Truex gets coveted win in Southern 500

Then late in the race he tagged the wall and while still being able to maintain his up front status, it might have had a big hand in his inability to chase down Truex at the end. Next weekend at Richmond International Raceway is the regular season finale, the last race before the Chase begins.

If Buescher is 30th or better after the September 10 race at Richmond, he makes the Chase.

Custer led 39 of the 66 laps but wound up second. “We’re all here trying to do the same thing, but that doesn’t mean it’s no holds barred and you just go out and wreck everybody or get wrecked by everybody”. I absolutely love that race track. Not with just one regular season left and the playoffs beginning September 17 when winning and losing will take on the utmost of importance.

In Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Darlington, Elliott Sadler won for the first time, holding off defending champion Denny Hamlin. If NASCAR had majors, the Southern 500 would be one of them.

In the NASCAR.com game, I’m again targeting the big names starting up front.

Sprint Cup drivers and teams have gone all out to dress up for the Southern 500 Sunday night, pulling out beloved paint schemes to honor stock vehicle racing’s colorful past.

Now watch, Custer will be punished by NASCAR for his post-race WWE impersonation, and future displays of raw emotion from young drivers will be throttled.

“I’m through with being a cheerleader”, he said of his crew. “This is a great honor”. Just couldn’t be more excited to win at Darlington.

“This is unbelievable”, said Truex, who earned his second NASCAR Sprint Cup Series victory of the season and the fifth of his career. I will talk with him.

The odds against Sunday’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 producing another first-time victor are relatively heavy. A caution with 18 laps to go bunched the field up one last time, but Harvick couldn’t do anything with Truex over the course of the final 12 laps of the Southern 500.

Why is that significant?

McMurray joked he was jealous previous year when Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Kyle Larson drove a “Mello Yello” themed vehicle at Darlington. So the odds say a driver who already has won this year will take the checkered flag tonight. Truex’s victory was the fourth for the Furniture Row organization. The three-time Darlington victor has six finishes of fourth or better in the last ten races here, including three in his last four. Several potential wins over the past three years have gone by wayside as a result, with the problem so prevalent SHR switched Harvick’s crew with that of teammate Tony Stewart for the 2014 Chase playoffs, which Harvick ultimately won. Larson took second from Harvick on the restart, but Harvick quickly got back by to retake the second spot for good.
