‘Trumbo’ leads SAG nominations in murky awards season
Elsewhere in film, SAG saw fit to fill its Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading (film) Role category with naught but portrayals of real-life guys, including Johnny Depp as Whitey Bulger in Black Mass, Michael Fassbender’s take on Steve Jobs, and Cranston as the aforementioned old coot.

Spotlight, with its heralded cast, was expected to rule, especially in the best supporting actor category (Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton), where it was surprisingly denied.
Ronan was honoured for her role as a homesick immigrant in Brooklyn, as well as Cate Blanchett for Carol, Brie Larson for Room and Sarah Silverman for I Smile Back. Whether this marks the beginning of an unexpected drive for gold from Trumbo will become clearer after the Golden Globe nominations are unveiled tomorrow morning (make sure to check back in tomorrow for our comprehensive breakdown), but Cranston had all but disappeared from the Best Actor race and Mirren’s wasn’t the hot name on anyone’s lips to begin with.
As for the rest of the actors that were honored, top nominees for this year include the nominees for the SAG best cast performance award (the SAG equivalent of the best picture prize). Blanchett also received a SAG nod for Carol, although her other award-worthy performance for 2015, the newsroom drama Truth, missed out and can likely be ruled out as an Oscar contender.
House of Cards tied with Game of Thrones for the most nominations with three, including Best Actor noms for Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.
On the small screen, the casts of “The Big Bang Theory“, “Key & Peele”, “Modern Family“, “Orange Is the New Black“, “Transparent” and “Veep” are nominated for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series.
The SAG Awards will air January 30 on both TBS and TNT. It was McAdams, though, that scored a nomination for best supporting actress for the film.

British period drama Downton Abbey was also nominated for best drama ensemble.
If there’s a saving grace for the SAG awards, it’s television, the categories for which have made nods to Queen Latifah, Uzo Aduba and Viola Davis. Usually, the victor of a SAG award ends up going home with an Oscar.
In the category of outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble in a motion picture, the nominees are the teams that worked on “Everest“, “Furious 7“, “Jurassic World“, “Mad Max: Fury Road“, and “Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation”.

The nominations were announced by Mom actress Anna Faris and Avengers star Anthony Mackie at the SilverScreen Theatre in West Hollywood.
