‘Trumbo’ leads SAG noms in murky awards season
And with a cast of New Zealand’s finest stunt men and women, Mad Max: Fury Road is nominated in the Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture category.

The coveted Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture will be a fight between Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short, Spotlight, Straight Outta Compton and Trumbo. Sticking with a odd pre-Golden Age view of television and its opportunities, SAG Awards voters also saluted Bill Murray (A Very Murray Christmas), Ben Kingsley (Tut) and Ray Liotta (Texas Rising) for deigning to act on the small screen and, in the process, left Fargo entirely nomination-free in the two movie/miniseries categories.
The other big contender at the SAGs will be Cate Blanchett’s movie Carol.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAGs) will take place in Los Angeles on January 30, and will be televised on TNT and TBS.
With that the case, such overlooked performers as Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy”) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (“The Hateful Eight”) might suddenly drop down in handicapping – though they could easily come back up when the Golden Globe nominations are announced.
While “Straight Outta Compton” was a box office and critical hit, its award season prospects were unknown.
On the movie side, the lead male actor field includes Cranston, Steve Jobs’ Michael Fassbender, Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Johnny Depp (Black Mass) and Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl).
There should be a newspaper investigation into what went wrong for “Spotlight” co-stars Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton, at least one of whom was expected to land a supporting actor nomination.
The same could be said of the all-too-familiar slates of nominees in the comedy and drama series categories.
The SAG nominations are the first major awards announcement in Tinseltown’s glittering awards season, which climaxes with the Academy Awards in February. He is the sole individual minority nominee in the movie categories of the 22nd annual SAG nominations announced Wednesday.
There were more diverse individual nominees in television than film, though, thanks in part to the fact that TV divides nominees into comedy and drama, allowing for more inclusion overall. The SAG nominations were unveiled this morning, and a few films once thought to be flagging have roared back with some key nominations.
Mirren will compete against Irish actress Saoirse Ronan for the lead actress gong. Actor Christian Bale received a supporting actor nod for his appearance in “The Big Short”, as did Idris Elba for his appearance in “Beasts of No Nation” and Michael Shannon for the film “99 Homes”.
Kate Winslet also earned a Best Supporting Actress nod for her supporting role in “Steve Jobs”.

Elba picked up a second nomination for his TV work, as the lead in the crime drama “Luther”.
Robin Wright, Claire Danes and Viola Davis will compete for the Female Actor, Drama award, as will Maggie Smith and Julianna Marguiles.
“Transparent” star Jeffrey Tambor, who lives in Cross River, is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series.

Fellow small-screen stars Amy Schumer (Inside Amy Schumer), Kyle Chandler (Bloodline) and Lisa Kudrow (The Comeback) were also absent from the list, while the appearance of Modern Family’s Ty Burrell and The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons just feels like déjà vu.
