Trumbo leads Screen Actor nods

Several movies grabbed two nominations each, including Beasts of No Nation, The Big Short and Spotlight, joining Trumbo in the ensemble competition that is the closest SAG gets to a best picture award.

Other nominees include “Beasts of No Nation”, “Spotlight“, “The Big Short“, “Straight Outta Compton“, and “Bridge of Spies“. The actors’ branch is the largest of the groups voting for the Academy Awards, so the SAG Awards are seen by many experts as a guide to possible Oscar nominations.

Among the women, Cate Blanchett was nominated for the romantic drama “Carol, ‘ Brie Larson for psychological thriller ‘Room, ‘ Saoirse Ronan for Irish immigrant tale ‘Brooklyn” and Sarah Silverman for ‘I Smile Back.

Other lead actor nominees are Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant“), Michael Fassbender (“Steve Jobs“), Eddie Redmayne (“The Danish Girl“) and Johnny Depp (“Black Mass“). Yet, individual nominations, especially for movies, remained largely white – only adding to concerns this will be yet another monochromatic awards season.

On the television side, the political drama House of Cards received three nominations, which included best cast, best dramatic actor for Kevin Spacey and best dramatic actress for Robin Wright. The Straight Outta Compton soundtrack is set to be released in January, around the time of the SAG Awards, which air on Jan. 30, 2016. She is nominated alongside Rachel McAdams for “Spotlight“, Mirren for “Trumbo”, Rooney Mara for “Carol“, and Alicia Vikander for “The Danish Girl“. Aduba also got a nod in the category of Best Ensemble cast for “ORANGE”, alongside THE COLOR PURPLE’s Danielle Brooks.

The Screen Actors Guild Awards honour the best film and television performances of the year and have traditionally served as a helpful indicator of potential Oscar acting nominees. Members of the SAG Awards nominating committee were invited to screenings of the latter, though. Thursday’s Golden Globe nominations could bring more attention to the issue.

She will go up against Kristen Wiig (The Spoils Before Dying), Susan Sarandon (The Secret Life Of Marilyn Monroe), Christina Ricci (The Lizzie Borden Chronicles) and Queen Latifah (Bessie).

In the category of outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble in a motion picture, the nominees are the teams that worked on “Everest”, “Furious 7”, “Jurassic World”, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” and “Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation”.
