‘Trumbo’ leads Screen Actors Guild award nominations

The other nominees for the best ensemble cast are – Netflix African war drama Beasts of No Nation, Wall Street comedy The Big Short, Catholic Church abuse probe Spotlight and rap movie Straight Outta Compton.

Spotlight, with its heralded cast, was expected to rule, especially in the best supporting actor category (Mark Ruffalo and Michael Keaton), where it was surprisingly denied.

Since many panel members also vote in the cinema Academy Awards, the nominees for the SAG Awards have traditionally served as an indicator of what could happen at the Oscars.

Female nominees for the same category included Cate Blanchett for CAROL and Helen Mirren for WOMAN IN GOLD.

The best actor race was less of a surprise, with Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) and Johnny Depp (Black Mass) among the nominees.

“Trumbo”, a biopic about a blacklisted 1940s screenwriter, scored the most nominations for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards announced Wednesday, with nods in three categories including best ensemble cast.

Hollywood’s lack of diversity has become of critical concern following last Oscar’s all-white acting slate.

For the upcoming 2016 SAG Awards, to be held on January 30, the whole cast of Game of Thrones is in the running for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series”.

The SAG Awards are considered one of the bellwethers of “awards season”, when a number of groups hand out honors for the best films of the year.

The SAG Awards nominations were announced Wednesday morning, and we have an ax to grind with the Guild.

“Trumbo” star Bryan Cranston earned a best actor nod for his role as Dalton Trumbo, while Helen Mirren got a best supporting actress nomination for playing gossip columnist Hedda Hopper.

On the comedy series front, the nominated actresses are Uzo Aduba (“Orange Is the New Black”); Edie Falco who picked up her record-setting 22nd nod for “Nurse Jackie”; Ellie Kemper (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”); 17-time nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) and Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation“).

Kidman also has plenty of competition, with Susan Sarandon (The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe), Queen Latifah (Bessie), Christina Ricci (The Lizzie Borden Chronicles) and Kristen Wiig (The Spoils Before Dying) the other nominees.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy includes Jim Parsons for his role of Sheldon Cooper in CBS’s BIG BANG THEORY and William H. Macy for his role as Frank in Showtime’s SHAMELESS.

Downton Abbey, which has been hugely successful in the United States, was nominated for best drama ensemble, while Dame Maggie Smith was nominated for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series for her portrayal of the Dowager Countess of Grantham.
