‘Trumbo’ leads US Screen Actors Guild film awards with 3 nods

The “Spotlight” team opted for supporting nods for all its actors, which meant that Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo likely split the vote and were left off the SAG ballot.

The winners will be announced in Los Angeles on January.

“It goes without saying that my performance is shared with the tremendous actors I work with”, wrote Elba, congratulating his “Beasts” co-stars Abraham Attah and Kurt Egyiawan as well.

Actor in a TV movie or miniseries Idris Elba, Luther; Ben Kingsley, Tut; Ray Liotta, Texas Rising; Bill Murray, A Very Murray Christmas; Mark Rylance, Wolf Hall.

The nominations definitely surprised, as many actors were left out, possibly killing their Oscar chances. The film, which is mostly seeing praise for Lawrence’s performance, didn’t get nominated at all. SAG has just announced the nominees for its 2016 awards, which include Trumbo, Mad Men, and first-timer Key & Peele.

The outstanding lead performance by an actress category is stacked with talent, with Brie Larson, for Room, the frontrunner ahead of Blanchett, Helen Mirren (Woman in Gold), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and comedian Sarah Silverman (I Smile Back) nominated.

On the other hand, the lead actress category was relatively predictable – minus Jennifer Lawrence, who was not nominated for her role in “Joy”.

Silverman’s mother died in August.

In a statement, Tremblay, 9, said that he was in Dubai with his family and they plan to celebrate with ice cream sundaes tonight. Other nominees included Spotlight, with a nod for outstanding performance by female actor in a supporting role for Canadian Rachel McAdams, and The Big Short.

The SAGs are often a solid early indication of Oscars hopes, since members of the acting guild represent some 20 percent of the roughly 6,000 voting members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. “Spotlight”, which tells the story of the Boston Globe’s reporting on the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal, made the cut in this category, as did the movie “Beasts”.

The Bryan Cranston-led Trumbo, about the titular “irascible old coot” who wrote Roman Holiday, nabbed three nominations, including one for outstanding performance by a movie cast. The movie opened in USA theaters on October 16, 2015. Leonardo DiCaprio joins the stiff competition for best actor, thanks to his role in “The Revenant“.

In the major category of best cast performance, the SAG Awards nominees may be forecasting a more diverse awards season than previous year.

Of course, Oscar ballots don’t even go out until the end of the month, and there will be more big awards news next week when the Critics Choice Movie Awards nominations are announced Monday morning and AFI unveils its top 10 list Wednesday.
