The Orioles (68-56) were hitless until Schoop led off the third with a moon shot over the left-field foul pole for his 20th home run.

The Nationals jumped on top in the first inning when Murphy singled for his 90th RBI.

Lopez gets rocked: What happened to Lopez on Tuesday night was much more like his first two big league outings, when he got shelled by the Dodgers and Giants. The stadiums are 38 miles apart on MD-295. The youngster also gave up just four hits and walked two in an outstanding outing.

Trea Turner was caught stealing twice after replay reviews in the first three innings, and Clint Robinson ran into an out to stifle a potential rally in the seventh. In his seven starts, he is 4-3 with a 3.65 ERA.

The 33-year-old signed a one-year, $3 million contract as a free agent in March and is hitting.276 with 12 home runs and 49 RBI in 107 games.

“A hundred percent I think I was good enough to go, but the recovery in between was becoming more of a challenge”, he said. “We just couldn’t get that one hit”.

In the third, Lopez was poised to maneuver out of a jam having surrendered just one run, but with two outs and the bases loaded, Murphy was unable to field a routine groundball off Hardy’s bat, the ball bouncing off his glove into right field. Zach Britton picked up his 38th save on the season for the Orioles. The left-hander has not allowed an earned run in 43 games since May 5.

Nationals: Espinosa ended a 38-game stretch without a home run.

The Orioles added two home runs to their major league-leading total of 194 home runs as a team this season. Trumbo, who also homered Sunday, has connected in successive games nine times this season.

Nationals: Baker expects Strasburg to spend the minimum time on the DL.

“Our young guys have come through in all departments – offensively, defensively, pitching wise – and their future’s bright and so is ours”, Baker said. “But like I explained to him, ‘It’s not hero time yet”.

The Rangers will have to make a corresponding move on their 40-man roster before today’s game for Holland, who has been on the 60-day disabled list because of left shoulder inflammation.
