Trump and Cruz battle for victory in Iowa’s leadoff caucuses

The Iowa caucuses officially kickoff the 2016 presidential election season.

Businessman Donald Trump leads Senator Ted Cruz in the Republican race. Bernie Sanders of Vermont has 49 percent, with 46 percent for former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and 3 percent for former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. ABC News will be streaming coverage from Iowa all day. He’s going to raise taxes – he’s said so, “I’m going to raise taxes” – and who’s going to pay for it? How Good Are the Iowa Caucuses at Picking Presidents?

Recent polls have had Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican Ted Cruz leading in Iowa, but a poll released Saturday shows Republican Donald Trump has replaced Cruz in the top spot, the Des Moines Register reports. Because of late registrations, party officials urge caucus-goers to arrive up to an hour early. Republicans vote on a sheet of paper.

“I just like her and I don’t like Bernie Sanders. I got it wrapped in August, and here you are”, said Wright.

“If you had told me a year ago that two days out from the Iowa caucuses we would be neck and neck, effectively tied for first place in the state of Iowa, I would have been thrilled”, said the Texas senator. Those high turnout caucuses are still going on. Iowa was 97 percent white-one of the main points of Clinton boosters was that a black man like Obama was unelectable-so Obama’s Iowa victory turned that shaky “conventional wisdom” into a counterfactual.

Whatever happens in Iowa, it’s on to New Hampshire next, CNN notes.

O’Malley admitted that he has had an uphill battle throughout the campaign but if his supporters turnout on Monday night, he still believes that he can stay in the fight.

History suggests there are two types…The first is a candidate who does well among Christian conservatives. Some candidates didn’t plan to wait. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, once seen as the likely front-runner, is near the bottom of polls. And, as you know, he’s doing terribly in New Hampshire. “If we stand together we will win”. Some could pivot quickly and throw their support behind another candidate. Candidates with the fewest supporters re-evaluate whether or not they’ll run, while candidates with the most supporters tend to gain momentum and press coverage that may help future elections.

Still, Trump spoke fondly of the campaign so far. Could a Huckabee exit and Trump endorsement be in the offing?

The Caucuses are party functions. And that means you’ll need to pay close attention to the outcome.

Caucus rules present a huge problem for the Democratic presidential hopeful.

There are 2,472 delegates to the Republican National Convention, so it takes 1,237 to win the nomination.

Iowa Democrats award delegates proportionally, based on the statewide vote as well as the vote in individual congressional districts. For the Democrats, Iowa has been a better predictor, with 5 of the last 7 to win Iowa eventually earning the nomination.
