Trump and Pence continue to bungle presidential ticket rollout

The Washington Examiner reports Monday that outside of Cleveland, where the Republican National Convention opens, Christie called on the GOP to unite around Trump and his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

A year ago, few imagined Donald Trump as a headline speaker at the Republican National Convention – let alone as its star. “We demand law and order”.

Priebus told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that Trump is calling for a temporary ban on immigration from countries that harbor and train terrorists until the US has a better vetting system.

The interview was a trainwreck tribute to the ego of Donald Trump, who made it clear that he was in charge and that the spotlight was always to be on him at all times.

The proposed ban is an example of where Trump differs from his pick for vice president.

Some Republicans sitting out of the convention and not embracing Trump is a sign of just how split the Republican Party is, said Montclair State University political science professor Brigid Harrison. Pence called such a ban “offensive and unconstitutional”.

“I think this is a good man who’s been talking about the issues the American people care about”, Pence says. And he criticised Trump’s race-based attack on an Indiana-born federal judge who Trump said could not perform his job because of his Mexican American heritage.

During the 24 hours since Trump announced his decision on Twitter, notable GOP (Grand Old Party) politicians praised the decision, calling Pence as strong on conservative, social and economic principles, including a staunch record of anti-abortion and anti-LGBT policies.

Trump took the lead for the majority of the interview, with Pence speaking about 50 times and Trump more than 100.

“Back to Mike Pence”, he said.

Joining Trump in the interview his vice presidential running mate Mike Pence said this is the kind of leadership that is needed in the US. “Obama’s weak, Hillary’s weak”, Trump tells Stahl. Hillary Clinton, that was just proven last week.

Clinton intends to announce the plan on Monday in a speech to the NAACP convention in Cincinnati, followed by a stop at an OH voter registration event with volunteers. Trump says Ivanka is “a very talented person” and that that some people had even suggested her as his vice presidential running mate, “but Mike [Pence] it is”.
