If Collins and Murkowski vote “no” and Democrats all vote “no”, the nomination would be blocked.

Schumer acknowledged Tuesday that Democrats will need to persuade at least two Republicans to oppose President Trump’s nominee for the Supreme Court, Brett Kavanaugh, and potentially derail his confirmation.
None of the judges named is older than 53, meaning any of them could sit on the court for several decades, allowing Trump to make a lasting imprint on the nation’s laws. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) seized on other aspects of Kavanaugh’s record beyond abortion rights and health care, pointing to his potential hostility to other liberal priorities as well as his expansive views on presidential power.
Future Republican presidents should be expected to continue this transparent approach, including by producing an up-front list of potential nominees, and Democrats should create their own version of it on the other side.
“Certainly, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Barrett have a lot of name recognition among supporters of the president, and I think that ultimately, when people like them are nominated, you’ll see a lot of folks line up”, he said. The group says it has reserved air time nationally and in those same states for another four weeks.
A GOP official said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had suggested Kyl for the task.
According to The Associated Press, Sen.
Kavanaugh ruled in one case involving abortion a year ago and is considered a likely opponent of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 ruling that legalized abortion nationwide. “I was a little bit comforted knowing I was not overreacting in my deep malaise”, said Stacy Hawkins, a professor at Rutgers Law School in Camden. That view has particular relevance as special counsel Robert Mueller is looking into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether the Trump campaign played any role in a foreign interference plot.
Kennedy announced his plans for retirement in June. He was in the running previous year for the Supreme Court seat left by the death of Justice Antonin Scalia.
“In keeping with President Reagan’s legacy, I do not ask about a nominee’s personal opinions”.
“Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law”, Trump said. Congressman Marsha Blackburn said Tennesseans would be well served by Kavanaugh and the Senate should consider him swiftly. He also praised Kennedy.
“He made a statement that really gives one some pause about what he’d do when he’s on the Supreme Court as opposed to an appellate court”, former Virginia attorney general Ken Cuccinelli told Politico last week. The framers established that the Constitution is created to secure the blessings of liberty. He served on the Senate Judiciary Committee during the confirmations of four of the last five justices who have joined the Supreme Court. Previous lobbying efforts by McConnell – including a push for fellow Kentuckian 6th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Amul Thapar, who would have been the court’s first Asian-American nominee – have failed.
Trump said he will publicly announce his choice to fill Justice Anthony Kennedy’s seat Monday night. That list included two people with Alabama ties: justices Kevin Newsom and William “Bill” Pryor of Alabama, both with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11 Circuit. But after working in the George W. Bush administration, Kavanaugh’s stance has softened, reports The Washington Post.
