Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort Resigns Amid Controversy

The campaign pulled another unexpected move by accepting the resignation of campaign chairman Paul Manafort on Friday morning (Aug. 19). “Paul is a true professional and I wish him the greatest success”, Trump said in a statement.

Manafort, who only took control of Trump’s campaign after former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski was sacked in June, did not appear concerned by this week’s appointments.

Neither Mr Manafort nor Mr Gates ever registered as foreign agents for their work as required under federal law. It wasn’t long before Manafort’s influence grew, and by June, he was effectively in charge of the campaign, hoping to position Trump as a competitive general-election candidate.

Manafort, 67, has been an outspoken part of Trump’s campaign, but in the past week, had his role shifted from campaign manager to campaign chairman with the promotion of veteran pollster Kellyanne Conway to campaign manager and Breitbart News’ Steve Bannon to campaign CEO.

Manafort joined Trump’s campaign last March, three months before the firing of abrasive campaign chief Corey Lewandowski. “I have done that, and believe it or not I regret it”, Trump said.

The Clinton campaign has vastly outspent the Trump campaign on television ads, according to The Center for Public Integrity, which tracks campaign ads.

The Trump/Putin love fest is going to continue to be an issue in the presidential campaign, especially because Donald Trump refuses to admit that he has business interests in Russian Federation and Ukraine. Some supporters say that and Trump’s most recent speech signal big changes to come from the campaign.

Also Friday, Ukrainian anti-corruption investigators released copies of handwritten ledgers detailing possible cash payments from Ukrainian political figures to Manafort totaling more than $12 million.

Manafort, in a statement earlier this week, has denied any wrongdoing.

A Trump source said Manafort told Trump he was becoming a distraction and he wanted to end that. “At least a half-dozen of Trump’s remaining aides have Russian connections, and let’s not forget about his own financial interests in the region, as well as his repeated praise for Putin”, Democratic National Committee national press secretary Mark Paustenbach said. He said he and Manafort had introduced the advocacy group to the firms and sometimes consulted with the firms on Ukrainian politics, the report said.
