Chicago protesters have shut down the Donald Trump rally at the UIC Pavilion, an event venue on the University of IL campus, after days of petitioning the venue to cancel the event. The Trump supporters had little choice but to push through the anti-Trump crowds that parted only slightly, yelling, “Racists go home!” One was arrested for assault, the other 31, for disturbing the peace. “I represent a large group of people that have great anger and they’re not angry people, but they have anger at the stupidity of what’s happening in our country”.
Local media broadcast aerial images showing thousands of people outside the University of Illinois-Chicago Pavilion, where the rally was due to be held. Asked if she would still vote for Trump on Tuesday, she said, “Absolutely, more than ever”. An announcement on the venue’s loudspeakers called on Trump supporters not to “touch the protesters”, adding that they should instead chant, “Trump, Trump, Trump”, when protesters were escorted out of the building.
There were several violent clashes, some sparked by Trump supporters attempting to wrestle flags from protesters.
“I think a campaign bears responsibility for creating an environment”, Texas Senator Ted Cruz told reporters in Illinois Friday night, as networks beamed in live footage of the protests.
Tension at a Donald Trump rally finally reached boiling point.as multiple fist fights broke out in Chicago forcing the candidate to pull the plug over safety concerns.
A few weeks before the Atlanta rally, at an event on the day of the Iowa caucuses, Trump said he’d been told “there may be somebody with tomatoes in the audience” and continued: “So if you see somebody getting ready to throw a tomato, knock the crap out of ’em, would you?”
“These were very, very bad protesters”, he said of those ejected at previous rallies.
“We have a very divided country, ” Trump said.
“We have some protesters who are bad dudes, they have done bad things”, he said. They happen at Trump events, and they happen because he goads the crowd, revels in talking tough and generally promotes a sense of grievance, aggression and confrontation.
Many of those who were waiting in line to get into the Friday night event identified themselves as protesters.
As tempers grew high, the Trump campaign made a decision to cancel the rally, citing “security concerns”. “These are the people that are destroying our country”. He said he was protesting because he was Mexican-American, and had “a lot of family who is targeted by the hate of Trump”.
Five people were arrested, and two officers were injured, Chicago police said.
However some people have taken advantage of Mr. Trump’s hospitality by choosing to disrupt his rallies by using them as an opportunity to promote their own political messages. “I do not want to see people hurt – inside or outside”.
