Trump, Carson bristle at talk of brokered Republican convention

A crowded Republican field for 2016 with more than a dozen hopefuls has meant Trump, along with Carson, U.S. Sen.

Establishment Republicans fear a Trump nomination would cause the party to lose the election and possibly seats in Congress, because he has advocated controversial positions such as rounding up and deporting millions of undocumented workers and a temporary ban on Muslims entering the U.S. A USA Today/Suffolk University poll released on December 8 showed that 68 percent of Trump’s supporters would vote for him if he broke from the party and ran as an independent.

“When my friends call me up, and they call me up very strongly, and they say – these are Muslims – and they say, ‘It’s something, Donald, that has to be talked about, ‘” he told CNN yesterday.

“My polls happen to have gone up a lot since this announcement, a lot of people thought they’d go down”. I’ve become more convinced now that the reason God invented pollsters was to make astrologers look accurate.

Trump’s remarks also provoked a rare intervention from the Metropolitan Police, who said he “could not be more wrong”. And we’ll defend his right to say it.

“The more Muslims feel sad, the more ISIS feel they can recruit them”, states a cloaked figure in the video wearing a Guy Fawkes mask.

“It does endanger national security, because it exhibits an attitude by one American who is running for the highest office of our land about a willingness to discriminate against a religion”, Kerry said. Just recently, Ted Cruz vowed to “carpet bomb” Middle Eastern territories, not only showing a disregard for the innocent civilians living under the punishing rule of the Islamic State, but going so far as to imply that he would resort to nuclear warfare — “I don’t know if sand can glow in the dark, but we’re going to find out!” he proclaimed to a cheering crowd.

Trump said he’s been told he’s doing Muslims “a favor”.

“Well, you know, poll numbers go up and down”, he said.

“I want to at least know where it’s coming from”. “I’m not looking to be politically correct”. At a town-hall event in New Hampshire on Thursday, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) joked that he “almost promised not to use [Trump’s] name today”.

A recent Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa poll shows Cruz 10 points ahead of Trump in the Hawkeye State.

Trump “is reminding us in that process that people are really upset and they’re really scared”, Rubio said. “If it’s going to be that way we’ll have problems”. Or, if unable to win the White House, create a substantial on-going political following, a constituency that would elect members to Congress and root the party permanently into American politics?

“I’ve been hearing about these closed-door meetings and I don’t like that. He says something completely insane and inflammatory and I’m like, ‘Oh my God!’ And then he dials back and sort of starts explaining it and saying how he would do and it makes sort of sense”. “But he signed the pledge based on everybody playing by the rules”.

What is a 'brokered convention'? Here is a (kind of) simple explanation
