Trump, Clinton win Arizona; rivals take Utah and Idaho

Tuesday night was a big night for Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who is working desperately to position himself as the only possible candidate who can stop frontrunner Donald Trump from securing the party nomination.

The Club for Growth said Cruz “is a consistent conservative who will fight to shrink the federal footprint, while Donald Trump would seek to remake government in his desired image”.

Trump leads Cruz 41 percent to 38 percent in the GOP race among likely Republican voters, with John Kasich behind at 17 percent. “If you don’t get enough delegates you lose”.

A strong victory in Utah with its sizable Mormon population with more than 50 percent vote gave Cruz all the state’s 40 delegates but he failed to narrow the gap with Trump in the race for 1,237 delegates needed to win the Republican nomination. The win furthered Trump’s argument that he will eventually win the Republican presidential nomination and that the party should rally around him.

Hillary Clinton is looking to directly contrast herself with Republican front-runner Donald Trump on Wednesday by declaring that now is a time for strengthening ties with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, not backing away.

Trump, who targeted Bush early in the Republican campaign, responded to the endorsement via Twitter: “Low energy Jeb Bush just endorsed a man he truly hates, Lyin’ Ted Cruz”.

“Right now, Kasich’s role is really being a spoiler”, Cruz told CNN Wednesday. Trump’s warning that he would disclose something about Heidi Cruz came in response to an ad by an outside political group that features a provocative photo of Trump’s wife, Melania, when she was a model and before they were married. It’s possible that Kasich’s presence in the race helps Trump and hurts Cruz in every state, but it’s also possible that it helps Trump in some states and hurts him in others.

“I think he’d be a tremendous addition to an administration”, Mr. Cruz said.

Clinton directly targeted Trump for his recent comments that the US should limit its involvement with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation – warning such a move would only be a boon for Russian President Vladimir Putin, “who already hopes to divide Europe”. “So you see this divide within the GOP between the southeast, which supports establishment Republicans consistently, and the north and west, which is must more interested in supporting outsiders”.

And he said if the wins California by a significant margin “we are going together to the White House”.
