The audience of warriors whom Mrs. Clinton faced proved far more peaceful than some of the delegates her colleagues were simultaneously seeking to reassure hours before the convention was to gavel in.

A CNN/ORC poll found Donald Trump had surged past her into the lead in the presidential race last week, with a strong bump out of the Republican National Convention. Sanders delivering a unity speech created to deter booing at the mention of Clinton’s name by linking her to shared values and priorities.

The Republican earned about two-thirds of the white vote, while the poll had Clinton with the support of about four of every five black voters.

This also appears to be the first time ever that Clinton’s image measures worse than Trump’s.

Mr. Trump told the Veterans of Foreign Wars gathered in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the group’s 117th annual convention that Mrs. Clinton has downplayed the problems at the VA and that her track record shows she is not ready to fix them.

The Democrats are now having their convention and Clinton hopes she sees a boost if the polls after her week long rally.

“I continue to believe Mr. Trump will not be president”, Obama said during a press conference at the U.S.-Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit in Rancho Mirage, California. Nor could Trump call for support on the last two Republican presidential nominees (Mitt Romney and John McCain) or the last two Republican presidents (George H.W. Bush and son George W. Bush). Sixty per cent say they would not be proud.

With his running mate, Governor Mike Pence, sitting on the stage, Trump laid out a 10-point plan to reform the Department of Veterans Affairs.

On tap for Tuesday’s DNC agenda are former President Bill Clinton and Gwen Carr, mother of Eric Garner, who died in police custody in Tompkinsville on July 17, 2014, while being arrested for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. But that may prove to be nothing but a sideshow in Philadelphia, given that Sanders has endorsed Clinton. That may be the most obvious thing in Philadelphia by week’s end.
