For instance, at the start, Colbert apologized to Trump for the many times he had insulted Trump in the past.

It was a bit disappointing to see Colbert go so easy on Trump in the first half of the interview, especially considering how tough he was with fellow Republican presidential punchline Ted Cruz the night before. Stephen Colbert offered Trump the chance to put the matter to bed when the presidential candidate appeared on The Late Show Tuesday night. “It’s hanging out there!”

“I don’t talk about it anymore”, Trump said. “I don’t talk about it anymore, I talk about jobs”.

All in all, Stephen Colbert’s interview with Donald Trump was “entertaining and insightful”. “You missed the meatball”. Trump, who once said he had a team of investigators in Hawaii looking into Obama’s origins, has grown suspiciously quiet on the issue since the president released his long-form birth certificate in 2011. “That would be you”, Trump told Colbert, “because I would never say that”.

Trump talked about how the country has big problems, including the fallout from the invasion of Iraq, which Trump said cost us $2 trillion, and thousands of lives, and de-stablized the Middle East.

The topic of the Iran nuclear agreement also came into the spotlight as well as Colbert’s second guest for the evening was Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, one of the chief architects of the global accord.

The host also played a game with Trump, asking whether a particular megalomaniacal quote could be attributed to the GOP candidate or the ultra-conservative character portrayed on The Colbert Report. Colbert’s audience began laughing at that point, but Trump was dead serious.
