Trump downplays judge comments in wake of criticism

It seems like an old song with a new verse: Republicans and others are condemning presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump – again – for something foul that Trump said. He was asked Sunday on CBS’s “Face the Nation” if a Muslim judge would treat him unfairly due to his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States.

Gonzales on Monday tried to explain his defense of Trump’s raising questions about the judge, saying he did not condone the focus on the judge’s Latino origin.

Trump has been on the defensive since his comments last week about Mexican-American US District Judge Gonzalo Curiel, who is overseeing fraud lawsuits against Trump University, the NY businessman’s defunct real estate school.

When former Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer brought up the memo during the call, Trump reportedly said, “Take that order and throw it the hell out”.

His recent comments about the judge presiding over his Trump University cases have many GOP leaders angry.

“I may not be asked to speak, but if I am at a convention or any Republican gathering for that matter, what I would communicate is the things I believe in”, Rubio said Monday evening.

“I ran for president and I warned this was going to happen”, Rubio said.

Each of these incidents brought condemnation in the media, but also saw Trump solidify his lead in the Republican primary.

Megyn Kelly intensified her criticism of Donald Trump’s racist attacks against the judge in the case while her colleague Bill O’Reilly defended the GOP presidential hopeful’s position. Indeed, in the future, I hope there are White Lawyers Associations. “I certainly can’t now”, said Flake, whose state has a large percentage of Hispanics.

A firestorm erupted after Trump suggested that Curiel has an “absolute conflict” in the Trump U. case because of his Mexican heritage.

“I do not think it is usually wise to attack a judge’s impartiality simply because of race or ethnicity”, he conceded to The Daily Beast.

It was unclear what, if any, effect the latest furor would have on Trump’s unorthodox candidacy.

One of his own campaign deputies sent around a memo yesterday asking top supporters to duck questions about Trump University, an understandable piece of advice given that, er, how does talking about Trump University or the litigation over it help Trump in any way?

U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel was born in IN to parents who immigrated from Mexico.

Susan Collins: The comments are “troubling”, it shows he lacks respect for the judiciary, and, oh, I can’t say with 100 percent certainty I won’t end up voting for Hillary Clinton. In spite of the harsh insult Trump leveled at McCain for the 5½ years the senator spent being tortured in a Vietnam prisoner of war camp, McCain now stands with Trump.

Trump doubled down over the weekend. That is why Newt Gingrich, no stranger to racial dog whistles, told the Christian Broadcasting Network Friday, “The person who’s most likely to beat Donald Trump is Donald Trump”.
