Trump Endorsement Not Enough to Help a Tea Party Turncoat
Ellmers, a registered nurse who was elected to Congress in 2010 on the Tea Party wave, was defeated by Rep. George Holding, R-North Carolina, according to the Associated Press.

Conservative groups such as Club for Growth and Americans for Prosperity targeted Ellmers in the race – Club for Growth was labeled “Trump enemy No. 1” by The Hill in March after the group spent millions on ads targeting Trump’s liberal record. Two-time Senate primary candidate Greg Brannon also got 24 percent of the vote.
Voters across North Carolina will head to the polls Tuesday to cast their ballots in the primary election.
Renee Ellmers (R) was presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump’s first congressional endorsement, but it in the end, it didn’t seem to matter.
Ellmers finished in a distant second to Rep. George Holding, who was pitted against Ellmers due to redistricting in the state, The Blaze reported.
Conservative groups have spent almost $1.2 million this year trying to defeat Ellmers, lead by about $790,000 from Club for Growth Action, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. “She’s actually, I think she lives in Lillington, but she’s part of the Republican Party”. Jones argues it shows he isn’t beholden to GOP leaders, but Griffin argues that Jones’s maverick ways have left him siding with Democrats too much of the time. It does not matter what Republican elites or mainstream media say about his positions; his supporters are his most ardent defenders, attacking his detractors and accusing them of duplicity.
“She didn’t do what she promised, and instead followed the Washington elite”, said the attorney, who voted for Brannon. “Whoo!” Ellmers said as she walked past.
“Renee Ellmers lost her job because she abandoned the limited-government principles she originally espoused”.
“Yeah, I know her”, Ellmers said.
Voters will consider a single seat on the Supreme Court, as well as their congressional representatives.
“Rep. Renee Ellmers was our ally until she led the charge to derail the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act”, Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the Susan B. Anthony List and a North Carolina native, said in a statement after the primary results were announced.
Placards that the two leave on doors for voters not home proclaim that “we can not trust Renee Ellmers to protect the unborn” and that her actions had “betrayed the unborn children who die from painful abortions every day”. So far in this election year, she is the first Republican House member to lose a primary.
But when Ellmers got to Washington, she quickly rose up the leadership ranks and became a trusted ally of former Speaker John Boehner. It was his first official congressional endorsement.

Tuesday morning, Voters at Apex Baptist Church were divided on who they support in the race. That was down from 13,590 in 2014 – though that year had an extra day of early voting and more races on the ballot.
