Trump finally endorses House Speaker Paul Ryan

“We may disagree on a couple of things but mostly we agree”, he added. “Very important. We’ll work together”. Wisconsin’s Republican state Assembly speaker, Robin Vos, released a scathing open letter saying he was embarrassed that Trump was leading the party ticket in November.

Mr Trump also endorsed New Hampshire senator Kelly Ayotte, with whom he has also sparred, calling her “a rising star”. “John McCain. I fully support and endorse his reelection”.

Trump broke with his usual form, reading from notes.

In a Tuesday interview with the Washington Post, Mr Trump declined to endorse Mr Ryan, and said that he liked the congressman’s challenger.

David Malpass has served under two previous Republican administrations, first as a deputy assistant Treasury secretary for President Ronald Reagan and later as a deputy assistant secretary of state for President George H.W. Bush.

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump endorsed House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) and Sen.

It’s not clear that Ryan is keen to receive Trump’s endorsement.

“Mr. Trump did this for party unity and I applaud him for that”, Nehlen said. “That is the mark of a true leader”. After all, how can you when you create unnecessary drama with the Speaker of the House.

“I don’t throw babies out”, Trump said.

The fact that Trump is a bad candidate has obscured the fact that the Republican Party has used some awful strategy in presidential election years.

“I like Paul, but these are awful times for our country”, Trump told the Washington Post in an interview Tuesday.

Republicans are concerned that Trump could lose not just his White House bid, but also cost them their control of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. “We need very, very strong leadership”, he said. “I’m not quite there yet”, Trump said at the time.

Trump received a cold shoulder from several of the highest profile Republicans in Wisconsin politics during his campaign event there, with Ryan and Gov. Scott Walker notably absent.

By Wednesday, however, Ryan did get the endorsement of Trump’s vice presidential running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, who said he’d gotten the go-ahead to do so from Trump.

“Arm in arm, we will rescue the country from the Obama-Clinton disaster”, Trump told supporters after formally declaring his support for Ryan in next week’s congressional primary. “He is a longtime friend. I believe we need Paul Ryan in leadership in the Congress of the United States”.

Ever since Mr Trump descended that golden escalator to announce his candidacy last July, his campaign has been a roller-coaster ride for the Republican establishment, alternating between reluctant acceptance and sky-is-falling hysteria.

Ryan, who withheld his own endorsement of Trump for weeks after Trump had clinched the party’s nomination, deflected Sykes’ questions about whether he might withdraw that support. “The plane I saw on television was the hostage plane in Geneva, Switzerland, not the plane carrying US$400 million in cash going to Iran!” If Mr Trump can get back on message with a few carefully modulated speeches and at least a handful of news cycles without outrageous statements, the polls could again narrow to within a more typical partisan split. He called Trump’s remarks “beyond the pale” in a radio interview with WTAQ but did not withdraw his endorsement of the GOP nominee.

“I’m not going to try and psychoanalyze this stuff”, the House speaker told Weber.

“All my life I’ve been told, ‘You have the greatest temperament, ‘” he said.
