Trump golf club in Puerto Rico files for bankruptcy

In the letter, obtained by Golf Channel’s Matt Ginella, Trump describes his devotion to the LPGA and its players while laying out his disappointment in Whan’s assertion that playing Trump’s course does not signify support for Trump’s stand on immigration.

Stalking horse bidder OHorizons Global LLC is seeking to buy the bankrupt club, free and clear of liens, for $2 million cash and the assumption of contracts, bankruptcy filings showed.

Originally opened as Coco Beach Golf, the property has a pair of 18-hole courses, including a Tom Kite-designed course that is a PGA Tour stop played each March opposite the WGC-Cadillac Championship, played in the Miami area at the Trump-owned Doral resort.

Coco Beach listed assets of $9.23 million and liabilities of $78.07 million according to the filing with the Puerto Rico bankruptcy court. “The Trump Organization continues to have a great relationship and incredible respect for the developer and its principals”.

It hosted the 2008 Puerto Rico Open, according to the Trump website.

The authority had sole responsibility to pay the municipal bonds, using money the golf club was supposed to remit. The company has been in default on the debt since 2011.

It is “probable” that the authority would be on the hook to pay back the bonds, said Charles Cuprill, the debtor’s attorney.

The problem is, the LPGA is not the sole decision-maker when it comes to the venue for the Ricoh Women’s British Open, which begins on July 30 at Trump Turnberry in Scotland.
