Trump heading to Mexico ahead of immigration speech

Trump seized an opportunity in the meeting to appear well-informed and diplomatic, characteristics not often applied to the candidate.

In a surprise move, Donald Trump will travel to Mexico on Wednesday to meet with President Enrique Pena Nieto, just hours before the Republican delivers a highly anticipated speech on immigration.

The GOP presidential candidate’s stance on immigration has gotten muddled after he suggested last week that his policy on the matter could be softened, a departure from his hardline position to deport immigrants who are in the country without permission.

It is not clear how Trump will be received in a country where he is widely despised. After one such roundtable this month, Conway, said Trump’s stance on using a deportation force to expel people was “to be determined”.

The Mexican people are not very excited about his visit, especially after he revealed his plans to build a wall at the southern border, in order to stop illegal immigration. She added that Trump’s plan would be “the toughest on illegal immigration than anyone’s ever been and he means it, he’s meant it from day one”.

This is Donald Trump’s first official meeting with a head of state as a nominee in the U.S presidential race.

“I have accepted the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto, of Mexico, and look very much forward to meeting him tomorrow”, Trump tweeted Tuesday night. In rally after campaign rally, Trump has pledged to “build a wall” on the USA southern border and force Mexico to pay for it.

A spokesman for the Mexican presidency said the meeting would be in Mexico and that details of the encounter were still being worked out.

Pena Nieto cast a different tone late Tuesday, writing on Twitter of the visit, “I believe in dialogue to promote Mexico’s interests in the world and, principally, to protect Mexicans wherever they are”. Christie made his own successful trip to Mexico City in September 2014 and has a warm relationship with the Mexican president.

After news of the Mexico visit emerged, Jennifer Palmieri, the communications director for Hillary Clinton’s campaign, noted Trump’s history of derogatory statements about Mexicans and his vows to deport 16 million people, including some who are US citizens.
