On a chilly Monday morning, the 89th annual Memorial Day in Winona, over a hundred community members gathered to honor fallen service people.
Rolling Thunder, with thousands of motorcycle riders in Washington for the holiday, held wreath-laying events at the World War Two Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. “Veterans are a group that stick together”.
“Fortunately, they all came home”, she said.
It’s a chance to rekindle a connection and sense of family that only a few understand.
“1975 is when I joined the military”, said Clinton Perry.
“Some don’t come back”, he said.
Trump paid the nation’s respects to those lost in war during Memorial Day ceremonies here today.
Making a special recognition to Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly, a retired general, Trump offered his thoughts to the Kelly family for their son, who died in Afghanistan. Daughters of the Union Veterans also spoke under the monument in the cemetery.
“Honoring veterans, our deceased veterans and our active duty”, said Joanne Iglesias, the director of the cemetery.
“The times when we could completely rely on others are, to an extent, over”, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Every Memorial Day, Rhodes remembers 28 of his Vietnam comrades who are no longer living.
Owings also noted why they honor veterans on the traditional date of May 30, and why that is important to him and others who have served their country. The public should take solace in knowing those who laid down their lives were not lost in vain.
“They gave the ultimate sacrifice, their life, to defend this country”.
Wreaths were placed in honor of each branch.
In his welcoming remarks, Mayor Brian Sullivan observed that the downtown Hillsboro Veterans Memorial “is a daily reminder that freedom is not free”, as are highways dedicated to Cpl.
“Feels good, it really feels good inside, in my heart. It meant everything for me to be here because I am a soldier of the cross”, Orme stated.
Each year the cemetery tries to make the ceremony a family event.
At the same time, we must acknowledge that today’s battles are fought by less than 1 percent of our population.

Members of the local American Legion Post led the parade, along with a local Boy Scout troop, as well as members of local fire districts and the Arlington Fire Department.
