Trump, Kaine to put Wisconsin in spotlight

Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence downplayed his running mate’s recent self-inflicted wounds, insisting plenty of excitement and support remains for Donald Trump. Walker is scheduled to visit northern Wisconsin that day to meet with residents and local officials recovering from flash flooding last month.

Indeed, Trump on Wednesday reported raising $80 million in July for his campaign and the Republican Party, a significant improvement from past months.

Ryan is not rescinding his endorsement of Trump, although Mr. Trump is refusing to back the Wisconsin congressman in his reelection race.

In recognition of the importance of the area, both state parties held their annual conventions in the Green Bay area this year.

Trump stunned Republicans by telling The Washington Post in an interview Tuesday that he wasn’t ready to endorse Ryan, who faces a primary contest in Wisconsin next week. He calls Trump out for saying “stupid things” and for praising House Speaker Paul Ryan’s primary opponent.

Walker is skipping a Trump rally in Green Bay on Friday night so he can instead go to a fundraising pasta dinner for the volunteer fire department in tiny Grand View, Wisconsin, about 250 miles away. The congressional seat is open, due to the retirement of Republican Rep. Reid Ribble, adding even more intensity and focus in the region. Trump, who had never previously run for public office, beat 16 rivals to become the Republican presidential nominee for the November 8 election.

Meanwhile, Democrat Hillary Clinton wooed voters in several cities including Green Bay. Trump is feuding with Khan’s parents after he implied that Khan’s mother didn’t speak alongside her husband at the national Democratic convention because she’s Muslim.

Priebus feels burned by Trump’s string of self-inflicted wounds and his refusal to observe basic decorum by giving Ryan his support.

Campaign manager Paul Manafort told Fox News the campaign was moving in a positive direction, with the candidate himself in control. Ron Johnson are all taking a pass on appearing with Trump on Friday.

In a statement, Trump’s campaign said his economic advisory panel included former steel executive Dan DiMicco; tobacco company Vector Group Ltd President and CEO Howard Lorber; and Trump campaign finance chairman and investment manager Steven Mnuchin.
