Trump leads a party divided

“This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction and weakness”, Trump said.

Donald Trump told cheering convention delegates Thursday night that he will continue to confound expectations and that his unlikely campaign won’t stop until he reaches the White House. Trump had called Cruz “Lyin’ Ted” throughout the primary, ridiculed his wife for her appearance and started a whisper campaign that Cruz’s father was in cahoots with Lee Harvey Oswald.

Trump’s acceptance speech as the party nominee was interrupted repeatedly by cheers and chants, whoops and hollers, by the enthusiastic crowd of delegates packed into the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

The first three days of the convention bordered on chaos, starting with a plagiarism charge involving his wife Melania Trump’s speech. “But Trump’s going to win”. By the way, under President Barack Obama immigration is down, killings of police officers is down, and illegal immigration is down compared to previous presidents. “Tonight, I will share with you my plan of action for America”, Trump said. “That is why I alone can fix it”.

Trump’s speech was consistent with the theme of many of his previous speeches, where he painted the current state of the country as bleak, unsafe and constantly under attack, and saying only he could solve the various problems if elected president.

He said: “I have joined the political arena so that the powerful can no longer beat up on people that cannot defend themselves”. He said Egypt, Iraq and Syria had descended into chaos, while Iran is about to have its hands on nuclear weapons.

“After 15 years of wars in the Middle East, after trillions of dollars spent and thousands of lives lost, the situation is worse than it has ever been before”, he said.

Nonetheless, 31 Louisiana delegates voted for the NY billionaire, including all five delegates pledged to Florida Sen. Trump will be introduced by his daughter Ivanka.

“Hillary Clinton is the ultimate Washington liberal insider”.

“It became clear (Cruz) was not going to endorse Trump, and the reason we knew it was we can see what the speaker is going to say a paragraph or two ahead on the massive teleprompter on the floor”, Schuh said.

There were also notable different talking points from speeches made by previously nominated Republican candidates, including protecting the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community and little mention of his faith and religious beliefs.

“I thought Pence did a very commendable job with a mainstream, conservative Republican message, and that message did not come through”, Hamilton said. “Beginning on January 20, 2017, safety will be restored”. The event was boycotted by many big-name establishment Republicans, such as 2012 nominee Mitt Romney and members of the Bush family that gave the party its last two presidents.

He has also called for a ban on Muslims from entering the US. All those positions go against prevailing Republican beliefs.

Trump’s speech was not about optimism, hope, the American spirit, or President Ronald Reagan’s “Bright shining light on a hill”.
