Trump makes a pitch for Connecticut, a Democratic stronghold

On Saturday, The New York Times reported that Trump has bragged to advisers about being able to read polls better than the political experts.

Trump is frequently critical of the Times and upped his attacks on the newspaper during a Saturday night rally in Fairfield, Connecticut.

The last time a Republican presidential candidate campaigned in CT during the general election was when Ronald Reagan made a stop in Fairfield in 1984.

Trump’s sojourn into CT raised eyebrows among many Republicans nervous about his slipping poll numbers in a series of key swing states and battlegrounds and even some usual GOP turf.

Mike Dupre, of Wolcott, said he wants the country to be run more like a business, which is why he’s been backing Trump all along.

“This is not a self-funded campaign any longer, and so I wouldn’t be surprised if there is also a fundraising motivation involved in this visit as well”.

Hillary and Bill Clinton earned $10.6 million previous year, according to a tax filing released by her campaign that sought to pressure presidential rival Donald Trump to disclose his tax returns. It has not voted for a Republican since 1988, when it went for George H.W. Bush, who grew up in Greenwich.

Once Trump arrived, he introduced a Fairfield family whose son, Trump said, had requested to meet the Republican nominee through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“I banned them about two months ago”, Trump said.

A successful offensive in CT could open the path to more potential blue state inversions.

Trump, a frequent media critic, also repeatedly denounced the press, prompting the crowd to jeer the reporters at the rally more than a dozen times. “I love CT. I have lived in CT”.

“At this point, Florida looks in trouble, North Carolina looks in trouble, they don’t even know who their people are in OH”, said Charlie Harper, a prominent conservative writer who runs a think tank in Georgia, where Trump is sliding in the polls.

Others questioned the use of the candidate’s resources.

Trump has repeatedly suggested that he will compete in traditionally Democratic states, vowing to commit time and energy to places like California and his home state of NY. However, his efforts before the CT rally have been minimal: He made one appearance in ME, cancelled a rally in upstate NY and has largely restricted his campaigning to traditional battleground states like Ohio, Florida and Virginia.
