Trump nears VP decision, candidates on standby for decision

UPDATE, 12:15 p.m.: Donald Trump is planning to announce that Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is his choice for his vice presidential running mate, CQ-Roll Call reports. The announcement comes after a day when Mr. Trump was stranded in Indianapolis after a malfunction with his aircraft grounded him in the city. They did not dispute that Pence could join the ticket, but insisted that no decision has been formalized.

The presumptive Republican presidential nominee tweeted on Wednesday night that he would announce his choice on Friday at 11 am in Manhattan (11pm on Friday Singapore time).

“Ms. Pence and I put out a breakfast spread late last night”, said Pence, “Went out and clipped some flowers, served coffee and warm breakfast this morning, just had good conversation as a family”.

Governor Pence, who faces a conflicting deadline on whether to have his name on the ballot to seek another term, said he was humbled to be considered for Mr Trump’s running mate.

“The point he made at the very end of our meeting, to all of us, was only one person knows who’s going to be the vice president and that person doesn’t know yet”, said Gingrich.

In addition to Christie’s governing experience, this source said Christie’s skills on the debate stage and the campaign trail could be appealing to Trump. Friday is also the day when Pence must declare whether he is running for re-election in his home state of in or if he is making way for other candidates by becoming Trump’s running mate.

In a sign of how seriously the campaign is considering Pence, Trump was joined at the governor’s residence for breakfast by his daughter Ivanka, son-in-law Jared Kushner and sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump.

Gingrich packs the political punch that Trump lacks.

Anti-Trump delegates are expected to make one last play on Thursday: a request to the convention rules committee for a change that would allow delegates to vote for any candidate next week, regardless of whether or not they are bound to Trump.

Mr Trump’s likely general election opponent, Hillary Clinton, is also unpopular with young people, but not almost to the same extent as the real estate mogul and reality TV star.

In an interview with The Associated Press on Monday, Trump said he’d narrowed his list to four contenders. I’ve been very prepared to fight in the media.

Newt Gingrich says he expects to hear from Donald Trump about his vice presidential decision as early as Thursday afternoon. “That I can tell you”. “He’s a good guy, by the way, a lot of people don’t understand that”, Trump said.

With Trump grounded in Indiana Wednesday due to mechanical issues with his plane, Gingrich reportedly flew to the state in a jet financed by Fox News’ Sean Hannity to make his case for VP, according to CNN.

While Trump mulls his decision, aides and Republican officials are putting together final plans for next week’s convention.
