Trump has been notorious for his hostile stance towards the Islamic world, which casts doubt on his statements to Al-Sisi.

Clinton’s decision to meet with him signifies the importance the US places on its alliance with Egypt, a relatively stable country in a chaotic Middle East.

The Democratic Party candidate and former USA secretary of state also “raised concerns about the prosecution of Egyptian human rights organisations and activists” in Egypt.

Egypt’s Orthodox Coptic Church, a staunch ally of el-Sissi, has dispatched senior clerics to exhort followers there to rally in support of him upon his arrival later Sunday and at the United Nations headquarters when he addresses the General Assembly later this week.

“Mr. Trump said that if he were fortunate enough to win the election in November, he would invite President el-Sisi on an official visit to the United States”, the readout said, “and would be honored to visit Egypt and the Egyptian people who he has a great fondness for”.

Some of the president’s previous visits in the West have been marred by protests or assaults on accompanying journalists by supporters of Mohammed Morsi, the Islamist president whose 2013 military ouster was led by el-Sissi.

Trump, at the rally, blamed Clinton and President Barack Obama for the rise of ISIS and characterized her as weak and ineffective.

That meeting came on the heels of her prior support for the authoritarian rule of former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak.

Sisi also met Hillary Clinton for an hour, with aides later saying they had discussed issues ranging from counter-terrorism to human rights.

“In Egypt there will not be a chance for any dictatorship because in Egypt there is a Constitution”, el-Sisi said.
