Trump says Clinton is “a bigot who sees people of color only as votes, not as people worthy of a better future”.
Trump, who was at the church with former Republican presidential candidate Dr.
When he was invited to the pulpit to speak, Bishop Wayne T. Jackson wrapped the visitor in a prayer shawl.
Trump faced criticism in recent weeks for wooing black voters but in front of overwhelmingly white audiences. We don’t want him.
He pledged to revive Detroit, which has fallen behind economically since the decline of its once-dominant auto industry, promising “new roads and bridges everywhere”.
Trump vowed that if he was elected president he would bring jobs back to impoverished black communities.
Though Carson insisted that Trump was “not pandering” to black voters, Democrats questioned the sincerity of the visit. That’s because Donald Trump actually appeared before a black audience.
‘I want to help you rebuild Detroit, make the city the economic envy of the world, ‘ he said to applause.
Reverend Wendell Anthony’s biggest worry is that you can not tell who Trump really is or where he stands on many issues. He said the African-American voice had been the “conscience” of America for centuries.
“It put a spotlight on pandering”, Riley said, “how little tolerance there must be for it from now on and how little respect we have for some black people that critics and politicians think they could be so easily swayed”.
“That’s my major reservation with Mr. Trump is how he’s treated those particular sets of people”, said Lockridge, who is retired and an environmental activist.
Unlike his usual campaign stops where he confidently addressed mostly white crowds that supported him and his plans for the country, Trump’s visit was more intimate. With the African American community, Thorn said, “He has a whole lot of making up to do”. The objective of Trump’s visit was “to listen” and “to learn” from the Afro-American people who live in Detroit. “And those who seek office do not do enough to step into the community and learn what is going on”.
Rev. Lawrence Glass, one of the clergy criticizing Trump’s visit, said the Republican represents the “politics of fear and hate” and that “minorities of all kinds have much to lose taking a chance on someone like” Trump. “I’m going to get things done for you”. Most polls show his support among black voters is in the low single digits.
