Trump promises affordable U.S. child care

Trump, who unveils his plan tonight, will call for six weeks of paid maternity leave.

Donald addressed federal regulations that now discourage informal care and opportunities to provide child care to parents at places of work, too-an issue Ivanka said she is “very passionate about” as a mother herself. And Ivanka was always saying, “Dad, we’ve got to do something about child care”. That’s why governmental support in child care is extremely important. On Good Morning America, Ivanka was asked if “all of the thousands of employees” of the Trump Organization receive paid leave, and she said they do.

They’re right on all scores. The benefit would also apply to stay-at-home parents or grandparents as well as those who use paid caregivers. As Samuel Johnson told Boswell, it’s like a dog walking on his hind legs: “It is not done well; but you are surprised to find it done at all”.

When Gupta pivoted to asking Trump about how Donald Trump proposed to pay for some of his most expensive policy proposals – such as the border wall with Mexico, infrastructure investment, and increased defense spending – Trump said that the policies would all be paid for as a result of the Trump campaign’s forthcoming tax reform plan. The deduction would be capped depending on which state the family resides and the state’s average cost of care. Her proposal focuses its benefits on lower-income families, unlike his.

“For low-income individuals who have no net income tax liability, we will offer an expanded Earned Income Tax Credit in the form of a childcare rebate”, Trump promised. The cost of this program would be another $7.5 billion in payouts from the unemployment system each year, on top of the payments already being made for actual unemployment.

That still would leave a sizable gap in how to pay for the overall plan. Nearly every state has a looming pension crisis, and the federal budget operates on 40% borrowed money – on top of having an entitlement-program crisis looming.

If Trump’s goal is to reduce costs for working families, he completely missed the point.

Some of those same surveys show low marks for Trump among suburban women, one of the targets of Trump’s speech in Aston.

Still, let’s give credit where it’s due.

So yeah, Trump is totally full of it if he thinks ending unemployment fraud is going to be the basis for an effective maternity leave plan. He looks downright progressive by proposing new federal benefits for families.

The contributions would be tax deductible, then grow tax free. It could also be a back-door government subsidy for private-school tuition.

The proposal relies on deductions, which are more valuable to higher-income households.

Trump’s child care plan is ill-considered.

Mrs. Clinton has also proposed a law to guarantee workers up to 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave to care for a new child or a seriously ill family member.

Some of the details are as vague as in Trump’s plan.

Parents could deduct the average cost of child care.

It’s progress when both candidates recognize that the U.S.is way behind all other developed countries on family leave. Child care is one of the biggest expenses many American families face, surpassing the cost of college and even housing in many states.

Trump had hoped to highlight the Republican presidential nominee’s new childcare policy, which she helped craft and introduce this week. New parents would be a political constituency for making the benefit more generous, and they would have an easier fight than people seeking to have an entirely new program created.
