Donald Trump has launched another attack on the press, the New York Times is the latest outlet to land within his sights after it ran a critical piece on his presidential campaign.

Trump’s made the comments while Gary Hart’s presidential campaign was imploding over an affair.

During the weekend campaign rally, Trump told supporters he was fighting against journalists instead of Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. The maverick billionaire saved his best theatrics of the weekend for a rally in CT where he railed against the press, saying his main opponent in the election is not “crooked Hillary” but the “crooked media”. Trump quickly added, “I’m running against the crooked media”.

Trump himself vehemently denied the story’s allegations Saturday afternoon in tweets saying he is “truly enjoying” himself on the campaign trail and calling the Times “a newspaper of fiction” which uses “non-existent unnamed sources”. The article, which described Trump’s mood as “sullen and erratic”, reported that Trump’s advisers wondered if he was “beyond coaching”. “The media protects Hillary!”

Trump went further and challenged the application of first-amendment rights: “It is not “freedom of the press” when newspapers and others are allowed to say and write whatever they want even if it is completely false!”

Donald Trump minutes ago posted a tweet lamenting America’s First Amendment protections for the press, continuing his charges that the media is unfair to him.
