Trump, Ryan say they’re committed to unity

If Trump turns out to be a disaster – or even a middleweight burden for down ballot candidates – the GOP could lose seats in swing districts. Many of Trump’s national policy positions easily blend with the concerns of the congressional Republicans.

“Paul Ryan is a patriot, and Donald Trump is a patriot, and they both want America to succeed, and that’s really the big common bond that will allow them to work extremely effectively together”, Carson said. It’s clear that significant policy differences remain.

“Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today in the presence of these witnesses, to join Paul Ryan and Donald Trump in GOP Unity; commended to be honorable among all; and therefore is not to be entered into lightly but reverently, passionately, lovingly and solemnly”.

Other observers note that political parties evolve over time, and on rare occasions go through a process of realignment. “The fact that we have an executive that has gone way beyond the boundaries of the constitution and how it’s important we restore Article One of the Constitution”.

Ryan said last week that he was not “ready” to back the party’s presumptive nominee.

For movement conservatives who’ve been fighting for the party of Reagan for almost 40 years, the Rubicon Trump has crossed is his open warfare on Reagan Republicanism itself. “I will concede that this has been a little bit more of a heated primary, so it may take a little bit longer than in years past, but we will come together”, state Republican Chairman Blaise Ingoglia told The News Service of Florida during an interview Friday afternoon.

The core reason the Republican establishment has opposed Trump is because they fear he will lead the party to a devastating defeat.

“This is a real quagmire for him”, said U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore, a Milwaukee Democrat who likes Ryan and made that comment with sympathy, not glee.

“I think this is going in a positive direction and I think this is a first very encouraging meeting”, Ryan told reporters. Being speaker also makes Ryan the protector of 247 Republican seats in the current House, every last one of which will be on the ballot in November.

He attempted multiple avenues to bring his popularity back up, including announcing former candidate Carly Fiorina as his running mate and attempting to team up with fellow candidate John Kasich. The New York billionaire, who needs the party behind him to bolster his chances at winning the Nov 8 election, has vowed to build a wall along the USA border with Mexico, deport 11 million illegal immigrants, temporarily ban Muslims from entering the country and impose trade protectionist policies.

Just how do traditional conservatives and Republicans differ from Donald Trump? The first involves policy and philosophy and whether Trump is committed to conservative ideas and principles. While the meetings were underway, the top Democrats in Congress took the opportunity to tie their colleagues to the controversial figure likely to carry the Republican nomination. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has used Trump’s unexpected success to hit Republican leadership for its unwillingness to hold a hearing on Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, and ratcheted up his criticism in a floor speech Thursday morning.

Senator Shelly Moore Capito of West Virginia urged Trump to be careful in his tone. “You can only assume that the Republican leader is not repulsed by Trump’s behavior towards women”.

House Speaker Ryan, the nation’s highest ranking GOP official, hews to the party’s longstanding platform of fiscal and social conservatism: low taxes, small government, free trade.
