Alice Stewart, a spokeswoman for Mr. Cruz, said the campaign was grateful for Mr. Romney’s support.
“I know it is early and these things can change”, Karpowitz said.
Sanders accused Trump of using harmful rhetoric.
Of those left in the race, Mr Trump leads with 683 delegates, followed by Mr Cruz who has amassed 421, according to the latest CNN estimate.
The Cruz campaign did not immediately respond to the news. But the OH governor said the election “is not a parlor game”, and he contends that he is the Republican best suited to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton in November. “That actually could happen”. Cruz is waging an uphill battle to wrest control of the Republican nomination contest following a string of Trump victories in states Cruz had counted on winning.
“That’s not my deal. I think that’s hard to sell with young women”.
“I like Gov. John Kasich”.
There is no love lost between the Republican establishment and Cruz, who once called the Republican Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, a liar on the Senate floor, but apparently it now looks at him as a known devil and thus a lesser evil than Trump.
The Texas senator said Kasich has no chance of beating Trump and the “only role Kasich is playing right now is as a spoiler because every vote for John Kasich is effectively a vote for Donald Trump”. His team hopes to pull in enough delegates in future contests on the East Coast and in California to best position him for exactly that.
Cruz, who received the endorsement of Utah Republican Sen.
Regardless, the bottom line is that for those who are trying to stop Trump, the smart vote in Utah is for Cruz. The main event Tuesday for Republicans will be the Arizona primary in which the victor will take all 58 delegates to the party’s national convention in July that will choose the nominee. “When he said that, I didn’t even cringe”.
Romney sees it differently.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks at a campaign rally at the Infinity Event Center on March 18, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The fact is that Governor Kasich did the ad buy and scheduled the trip before last Tuesday’s primaries when Marco Rubio was in the race and it was plausible for Kasich to win delegates in the state due to Rubio and Cruz splitting the conservative vote in Utah.
Following the rally, Cruz told reporters that he thought it was deplorable that GOP-front runner questioned whether Mitt Romney is really a Mormon.

Beck spoke to the crowd of his Mormon faith, and several speakers mentioned the need for a “Philadelphia Moment”, a reference to the tenuous first days of the republic when the founding fathers rallied in the city to save the nation in its infancy. “OK, I love the Mormons”, Trump said at a rally in Salt Lake City.
