Trump’s San Diego rally draws more than 1000 chanting protesters

About a thousand Trump foes demonstrated outside San Diego’s convention center, some engaging in shouting matches with the candidate’s supporters and many carrying signs critical of his plan to wall off the USA border with Mexico, which runs just south of the city.

35 people were arrested Friday after a protest outside a Donald Trump rally in San Diego.

San Diego, which is often viewed as a “bi-national” city, sees almost 300,000 people crossing legally from Mexico through the San Ysidro port alone, according to Reuters.

According to police, confrontations between protesters and police erupted Friday afternoon, including the throwing of rocks and bottles at officers.

At one point a protester pulled at a gate but other demonstrators tried to calm him down.

Donald Trump responded on Twitter by thanking the San Diego Police Department and calling the protestors thugs.

Approximately 23 percent of Hispanics said they’d vote for Trump in a May poll conducted by Fox News Latino.

San Diego was one of two Californian cities where Trump, the presumptive GOP nominee, spoke Friday ahead of the state’s June 7 primary. The Associated Press reported that about a dozen people were arrested.

Trump’s appearances have brought together large numbers of supporters and protesters, often divided over his comments about immigrants and Muslims and his plan to build a wall on the Mexican border.

The suggested debate, an idea first raised during a talk show appearance by the NY billionaire, would have sidelined likely Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton but given Sanders a huge platform ahead of California Democratic primary.

Sanders, a US senator from Vermont, expressed disappointment on Friday, and sought to goad Trump into reconsidering.

This might be a good time to catch up, if you haven’t, on the legal saga of Trump University, which I’ve been following for more than a year (when I first looked into it as part of my research into the work of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman).

Trump suggested broadcast networks were unwilling to go along with his demand that at least $10 million raised from the encounter be donated to charity. Everybody says it, but I have a judge who is a hater of Donald Trump – a hater. “I’d love to debate Bernie”, he said, but added that he proposed giving the proceeds from the debate to charity and that the networks “wanna keep the money to themselves”. Democrats nationally remain evenly split between Clinton and Sanders.

“Honestly, folks, we have leadership right now in this country, especially at the top, that is grossly incompetent”, Trump said.
