Trump’s Words: What Kind of ‘Joke’?

At a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina Tuesday, Trump told the crowd, “Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish, the Second Amendment”.

It listed 50 prominent Republicans and independents who have endorsed her so far, including Hewlett Packard CEO Meg Whitman and former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Clinton is in town to tour Raygun, a printing, design and clothing company and attend a campaign rally. “Although the Second Amendment people – maybe there is, I don’t know”.

NEWS BRIEF An uncharacteristically quiet Donald Trump didn’t confront his campaign’s latest controversy during a rally Wednesday-his recent off-the-cuff remarks suggesting gun-rights advocates could prevent Hillary Clinton from appointing Supreme Court justices.

US Representative Peter King on Wednesday criticised the remark but said Trump had the temperament to be president. The U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment guarantees a right to keep and bear arms.

Like so many times before, Trump’s supporters and opponents construed his comments in entirely different ways. It aims to use a wave of almost 50 recent endorsements by high-profile Republicans and independents to convince voters to cross party lines.

Clinton went on to thank Republicans who have stood up to Trump and demanded he apologize or take back his remarks.

But at his rally earlier in the day, Mr Trump had actually been discussing what could happen once Mrs Clinton was president, not before the election.

James Rohrscheib, 74, a registered Republican and retired US navy officer from Washington state, told Reuters the reality is the November 8 election will be a “tough one”.

Trump has dismissed the defections and criticism as an unsurprising reaction of the so-called Washington elite to his drive to change the status quo.

Clinton was making her first appearance in Iowa since winning the Democratic caucuses in February.

One group that appears unswayed is Trump’s donors.

“The fact is, too many families in America have suffered-and continue to suffer-from gun violence and the vast majority of the American people – including the vast majority of gun owners – believe we can and must do better”, the statement said.

Trump Texas fundraising co-chair Gaylord Hughey called the interpretation of his remark as condoning violence “ridiculous” and “ludicrous”. During an interview where he blasted Clinton for her handling of the Benghazi attack and her private email server, he said, “Clinton should be put in the firing line and shot for treason”.

But Mike Smith, a Republican voter respondent, said the support Trump is still receiving from Republicans “almost seems obligatory rather than voluntary”.

But Democrats saw – and seized – an opportunity to reinforce the perception that Trump can’t moderate the things that come out of his mouth, much less the decisions he’d make as president.
