Despite spending more days in Iowa than either of his rivals, the former Maryland governor and Democratic hopeful saw his polling drop to just 3 percent in The Des Moines Register/Bloomberg News Iowa Poll released Saturday – fueling questions about whether he’ll meet the 15 percent threshold at each precinct needed to win a delegate.

Asked whether Rubio could win or come in second, his senior strategist Todd Harris laughingly responded with an obscenity and said the goal in Iowa is third, behind the flamboyant Trump and the highly organized Cruz. Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are moving closer to debates in March and beyond, though the party has yet to sign off. This followed the announcement that MSNBC and the New Hampshire Union Leader would host a debate in New Hampshire on February 4 before the Granite State’s first-in-the-nation primary.

In recent days the Democratic presidential race has been consumed by whether the party would hold additional debates beyond the six sanctioned ones already scheduled.
