Trump says he was against Iraq war all along, disputes Clinton

NOTE: Earlier, Hillary Clinton said she had “taken responsibility” for her earlier support of Iraq war, but Trump “was for the war in Iraq”.

The claim drew renewed scrutiny Wednesday evening when he repeated it during NBC’s “Commander-in-Chief” forum.

The problem for Trump’s claim, then, is the basic concept of time.

Speaking at Cleveland Arts and Social Sciences Academy, the Republican presidential nominee said that if he had been in Congress at the time, he would have voted against authorizing the military conflict.

“Just days after the war started, I was quoted as saying the war is a mess”, Trump said, calling it “more evidence that I had opposed the war from the start”.

“Yeah, I guess so”, Trump said.

Various fact-checkers have cited this interview to debunk Trump’s statement that he was always against the war. Trump gave the interview in 2004.

“Well, I’m starting to think that people are much more focused now on the economy”.

He added later: “Well, [President Bush] has either got to do something or not do something, perhaps. He’s, I think he’s doing a very good job”. The war began in March 2003.

The event will be Trump’s second stop in OH in four days. You can go back and look at the record.
