Trump says he would implement ‘extreme vetting’ of immigrants
In a speech in Ohio, Mr Trump said applicants will be tested to determine if they shared Western liberal values, such as religious tolerance. “Very important – some don’t share this goal. We cannot always choose our friends, but we can never fail to recognize our enemies”.

Trump’s speech was largely meant to remind supporters why they hate Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and it likely worked on that level. Earlier this month, Trump had called Obama and Clinton the co-founders of the Islamic State, which he echoed Monday, saying, “The rise of ISIS was the direct result of policy decisions made by President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton”.
He also challenged Clinton’s fitness to be president, declaring she lacks the “mental and physical stamina” to take on the Islamic State.
At this point, his OH remarks shared simply an overview of his proposed ideas and policy adviser Stephen Miller indicated that more specifics would come in speeches down the road.
Trump took aim at Clinton and Obama for not calling the threat “radical Islamic terrorism”, saying, “Anyone who can not name our enemy is not fit to lead this country”.
The costs of an expansion of that system as Trump has proposed, she said, would likely be “extraordinary”. This is not Russian Federation and the United States facing off across the Berlin Wall.
Trump was introduced by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, his vice presidential nominee, and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, whose appearance was unannounced.
Trump insisted that Obama’s failure to reach an agreement with the Iraqi government to leave a residual presence of American troops in Iraq and his withdrawal timetable “surrendered our gains in that country and led directly to the rise of ISIS”. “I call it extreme vetting”, Trump said in the speech at Youngstown State University.
To put these new procedures in place, we will have to temporarily suspend immigration from some of the most unsafe and volatile regions of the world that have a history of exporting terrorism.
The Republican presidential nominee told supporters in OH on Monday (15 August) that his administration would also “temporarily suspend immigration” from what he deems as the more risky countries in the world. “We will be tough, and we will even be extreme”, he said in describing the “ideological screening test” he would force potential immigrants to pass.
“I call it extreme vetting”, said the NY billionaire. “He would nearly certainly fail, given his general ignorance and weak grasp of basic facts about American history, principles and functioning of our government”, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said in a statement before the speech.
Trump’s efforts to focus on the economy last week ran afoul following off-the-cuff comments he made at rallies. In truth, ISIS conducts horrific violence on people of every faith-including Muslims-who are not on its team.
The GOP nominee indirectly blasted the pair for their lack of leadership in confronting the Islamic State.
But Mr. Trump said the bigotry was coming from radical Islam’s “ideology of hatred”, citing the discrimination and mistreatment of women, gays and other groups in some Muslim countries. In his address, Trump laid out his foreign policy vision for America.
But attacks on Clinton’s record and judgement also appeared to have a gender element.
Despite Trump’s newfound desire to work with USA allies to combat terrorism, Trump knocked German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s policies on admitting refugees in an attack on his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.
Mr Trump also promised to work with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in the fight against militants.
The third plank of his plan to defeat ISIS involves “restoring common sense to our security procedures”.

Mr Trump’s accusation that Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton created the so-called Islamic State extremist group had imperilled the lives of USA troops, Mr Biden said.
