Trump has called for a new “extreme vetting” system that would apply an ideological screening test to potential immigrants, asking whether they support concepts like women’s and gay rights. The former president said, “Our administration has moved aggressively to secure our borders more by hiring a record number of new border guards, by deporting twice as many criminal aliens as ever before, by cracking down on illegal hiring, by barring welfare benefits to illegal aliens”.

Mr. Trump said the country’s open immigration policies made possible the weekend bombings, and he vowed to restore common sense to American immigration policy.

In her news conference on Monday, Clinton also warned against the instinct to villainise entire groups of people based on religion.
