A friend of mine who is connected in the world of celebrities and New York multi-millionaires has met Trump several times. Protesters, many of them Hispanic, shouted “shame on you“, while some Trump fans retorted, “Keep them out!” This oft-repeated, “On day one, I will …” is a nice rhetorical device, but is more simplistic than realistic.

Perhaps the best way Trump could serve the nation is to help lead a called convention, perhaps in December, with the express goal of redefining the principles of the Republican Party.

Despite Trump’s slam on Monday, the current Republican front-runner did not engage at the debate while candidates like Paul, Bush, and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina discussed the merits of mandatory-minimum drug-sentencing laws, states’ rights to legalize weed, and the use of medical marijuana.

He said crowds should be prepared for an entertaining show. “It’s the same old shtick every time“.

Probably the most encouraging development was the candidates’ willingness to support each other in calling out Trump’s boorishness.

That remark followed last week’s controversy that erupted when Trump was asked a question by an audience member at a New Hampshire town hall meeting.

“Well, he hasn’t been real definite about that, has he?”

“He’s a guy that’s out here with the people, he understands what our problems are”, Oklahoma City resident Bruce Gaver said.

Trump’s campaign rounded up a series of controversial Bush comments, including his admission during a debate last week that he had smoked marijuana 40 years ago, and posted it to Trump’s Instagram account.

During a July event in Iowa, Trump had said he’d never asked God for forgiveness for his sins, a central tenet of Christian faith. He is “the person that lands that plane”, rather than justsomeone who talks about it”.

While many question her ultimate viability, the businesswoman is viewed as a powerful political weapon in the GOP’s push to court women, particularly in a 2016 contest that features Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Trump’s schedule raises some interesting dynamics …
