Trump Surges After RNC In New National Polls

CNN pointed out that there hadn’t been a post-convention bounce like that since 2000. Another poll from CBS News out Monday morning showed the two candidates tied at 42 percent. 43 percent of independent voters surveyed said that they are more likely to vote for Trump after the convention. Clinton and Trump each have the support of 42 percent of voters. When asked to choose a preferred candidate between the GOP nominee and presumptive Democratic nominee, 48 percent of respondents chose Trump while 45 percent chose Clinton. That while Trump expanded his lead with white voters who did not hold a college degree from a 51 per cent to 31 per cent lead before the convention to a 62 per cent to 23 per cent lead now.

The convention also helped Trump make strides in his personal image.

Polling aggregator Real Clear Politics, which averages a series of recent opinion surveys, now gives Trump a 0.2 percent overall lead. And almost half now say he’s in touch with the problems ordinary Americans face in their daily lives (46% say so, 37% did before the convention).

After his party’s convention, Trump is getting the support of 81 percent of Republicans – a slight uptick from before the convention, but short of the 90 percent Romney was getting after the conventions four years ago. Sanders is reportedly planning to meet with delegates on Monday after DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz stepped down in the wake of the leak-only to immediately join Clinton’s campaign as “honorary chair”. However, 53 percent of voters still view the businessman negatively. This result, like the CNN poll, has Trump and Clinton within the margin of error.

Going into last week’s Republican convention, 60 percent of Republicans had a favorable view of Cruz.

During the Republican primary, Trump said that McCain “was not a hero”, despite the fact that he spent over five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. On the one hand, the conventions are not a particularly good time to sweat every tick in the polls.

All of the latest polls put Trump ahead of Clinton following the convention, during which many speakers laid into the Democrat on issues including terrorism, security and Benghazi. That is, until they realize, as CNN reports, that Trump’s running mate Mike Pence supported the Trans-Pacific Partnership as well. Another 20% think they need more information. While 60% of Republican voters had a positive impression of the former presidential candidate before the convention, just 33% have one now. Depending on the poll, the lead is fueled by an increased margin among independents and further consolidation of Republican voters.

But even before it begins, Clinton’s convention is mired in controversy. Sixty percent say they would not be proud.
