His supporters erupted in a roar when CNN called the contest in his favour – his second win of the nominations race after New Hampshire and an important test of the strength of his bid to succeed President Barack Obama.

Still, he was lagging far behind in the primary in SC, where his well-organized campaign was outmatched by insurgent billionaire Donald Trump, and Sens.

Mr Bush’s decision comes as pressure on him to pull out from the race to pave the way for a viable candidate to stop Donald Trump grew.

Jeb Bush will not follow his father and brother to the White House after he quit his campaign for the Republican nomination following a fourth place finish in the SC primary.

In Spartanburg, Trump thanked his family, supporters and volunteers for his campaign’s success in the Palmetto State. Those results may shift through the night, we’ll note, but that figure is slightly higher than in 2012, when 65 percent of Republican primary voters identified themselves that way.

Mr Rubio who finished second with 22.5 per cent and Mr Cruz, who finished a close third with 22.3 per cent votes, both claimed to represent the voice of evangelical and conservative constituencies.

John Kasich and Ben Carson were also well behind in SC, raising questions about the long-term prospects of their campaigns.

Trump had a five-point lead in an NBC/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll released Friday, winning by more than double despite his battling negative comments from the Pope, who said his views were not in line with the teachings of Jesus, and defending 2003 remarks that supported the United States’ invasion of Iraq.

Bush was introduced by South Carolina Sen.

In Richland County, 28,176 individuals went to the polls during the Republican presidential primary in 2008.

That’s roughly how the night was shaping up, with Rubio and Cruz battling it out under the victor.
