Trump unfit to be president, does not abide by norms: Obama

Trump quickly hit back at the president and Clinton, whom he often says is running for Obama’s third term, as embracing policies that have destabilised the Middle East, hurt veterans and shipped American jobs overseas. Obama questioned whether Trump would “observe basic decency” as president, argued he lacks elementary knowledge about domestic and global affairs and condemned his disparagement of an American Muslim couple whose son was killed while serving the U.S. Army in Iraq. Trump implied the captain’s mother did not speak at the Democratic National Convention because she is Muslim and that the dead soldier’s father is “bothered” by Trump’s plans to keep “radical Islamic terrorists” out of the United States. On Thursday, July 21, 2016, Donald Trump became the Republican candidate for the Presidency of the United States of America and arguably the most powerful job in the world. “And the alternative is that the entire party, the Republican Party effectively endorses and validates the positions that are being articulated by Mr Trump”, Obama said.

Khizr Khan gave a speech at last week’s Democratic convention claiming Trump “sacrificed nothing and no one”, prompting Trump to speculate why his wife Ghazala hadn’t delivered her own remarks (she later said she was too pained over her son’s death to remain composed during remarks).

Trump said he was “honored” to receive it. He then joked that “I always wanted to get a Purple Heart”. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, who had criticized his treatment of the Khans, for not being supportive of his campaign. He has fired back at Khan on Twitter and at rallies, going so far as to imply Mrs. Khan didn’t speak because her husband didn’t allow her to.

But like the other Trump supporters in Ashburn, the missteps are not almost enough to erode their confidence in the candidate, said Galloway, a former Marco Rubio supporter who is now on the Trump train.

Celeste Zappala, who also signed the letter, said the grief that Gold Star families suffer earns them the right to say whatever they want.

Prominent Republicans spoke out Monday against Trump.

Even Clinton aides and convention planners who described how the address came together said they never the response that would soon follow. Few members actually mentioned Trump by name.

Neiberger-Miller said the one positive thing to come out of this may be that Americans are learning more about Gold Star families.

“This is daily and weekly where they are distancing themselves from statements he’s making”, Obama said.

“While our party has bestowed upon him the nomination, it is not accompanied by unfettered license to defame those who are the best among us”, he added. Trump said in an interview with ABC the following Sunday.
