Farther out to sea, Tropical Storm Gaston’s maximum sustained winds had increased to near 50 miles per hour at 4 a.m. Tuesday (tbtim.es/gaston). “The track brings it into the open waters of the Atlantic as a hurricane – and it could get up to Category 2 before weakening”.

The heart of hurricane season is here, and the tropics are certainly alive.

That could be a different story for another disturbance in the central Atlantic.

A Hurricane Hunter aircraft is scheduled to fly the wave today, giving us better insight and data for future forecast.

The storm is moving north-northwest at 21 mph, and is now about 660 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands, which are about 350 miles off the coast of Senegal in Africa. Conditions are favorable for it to develop into a tropical storm later this week. If, however, the system travels north of the major Caribbean Islands, then more significant and rapid development could occur as it makes its way toward the United States. Named storm or not, strong winds, heavy rain, flooding and mud slides will be possible in those areas.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic, Tropical Depression Fiona persists, but barely, with sustained winds near 35 miles per hour.

Indian River County Supervisor of Elections Leslie Swan has standby generators for polling places and alternative voting sites if one has to be closed, she said Tuesday. Fiona became a post-tropical depression today, August 23. Gaston will likely turn toward the northwest and slow down in the next couple of days, posing no imminent threat to land. Tropical Depression Seven is moving towards the west near 18 miles per hour or 30 km/h with a turn towards the west northwest expected today, on this track the tropical depression is expected to pass to the north of the region.
