With the Cubs leading 8-0 in the fifth inning Monday, Bryant was hurt making a catch in left field when center fielder Albert Almora Jr. ran into him.

After a few harsh words, Maddon was ejected for the second time this season.

Meals ejected manager Joe Maddon in the second after a questionable strike call with David Ross batting.

“It was pretty much the culmination of other calls that were going against us recently at the plate”, he said.

“I wish it was a different situation for Mack to enter”, Reds manager Bryan Price said. “I haven’t had a day off in a while”.

Joey Votto added two RBI and Jay Bruce homered as the Reds beat the Cubs for the second time in 12 games this season after almost blowing a 5-0 lead.

Phillies 5, Braves 1 – Maikel Franco homered for the third straight game, and Philadelphia hit four overall to get the win.

Gonzalez, who went seven innings in a loss at Houston last week, struck out three and walked one.

Pirates 7, Cardinals 5: Jung Ho Kang drove in two runs with a seventh-inning double a day after Chicago police announced it was investigating an allegation of sexual assault against the infielder as Pittsburgh recorded its seventh straight win. This Reds team is an absolute joke today and the flawless tonic the Cubs need to rinse that bad taste the Mets left within their mouth. We know we can beat those guys. Certainly we wish Devin Mesoraco was back and healthy and mauling faces in the middle of the Cincinnati lineup, but Tucker has yet again shown he can be a capable – if not more – backstop at the big league level, and has been immeasurably valuable to the club in yet another injury plagued season.

Cubs slugger Kris Bryant hit his NL-best 24th home run before leaving because of a bruised leg. Willson Contreras and Addison Russell also homered for Chicago. But, Kyle Hendricks got the Blue and Red off the snide and delivered 5 1/3 innings, 4 hits, 0 earned runs, and a win.

Lackey has posted quality starts in 11 of his last 12 outings, with the one exception an ugly performance at Miami in which he allowed seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Bryant, Baez and Russell each connected in a four-run third. Suburban Chicago product Tony Cingrani, celebrating his 27th birthday, worked the ninth.

Reds: Reliever Jumbo Diaz was available after getting a day off because of a sore right ankle.

A day after having seven players selected for next week’s All-Star Game, the Cubs lost to the last-place Reds for the second time in three days. The most serious treatment he underwent was using an ice pack, he said. Santana (3-7) pitched his eighth shutout and 15th complete game, helping the Twins take two of three from the A’s.
