Tuesday’s Red Sox-Padres matchups: Clay Buchholz vs. Paul Clemens
San Diego Padres relief pitcher Leonel Campos yells into his glove as he walks off the field after the last out of the top of the ninth inning against the Boston Red Sox in a baseball game Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016, in San Diego. In his last three starts, he is 1-0 and has allowed just one run in two of them. Knuckleballer Steven Wright, meanwhile, remains shelved with a lingering shoulder injury.

Buchholz entered Tuesday’s game with a 5.20 earned run average. He retired 25 of 26 – the lone baserunner coming on a fourth-inning walk – after giving up Logan Morrison’s three-run homer in the first. Buchholz got the nod after posting a 2.86 ERA in August in nine appearances, including three impressive starts.
Pomeranz gave up two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings. Manager John Farrell said there’s no timetable for Wright’s return. “He got down and underneath some left-handers’ swings”. The righty threw a 1-2-3 inning, and the fastest pitch he threw was 86.7 mph, per BrooksBaseball.net, with his fastball sitting at 85.7 mph.
Buchholz has never faced the Padres in his 10-year career. In June the Padres claimed the 28-year-old off waivers from the Marlins. In San Diego, Clemens is 1-4 with a 4.54 ERA and a 1.542 WHIP in 11 games (seven starts). He struck out three and walked three in dropping his third straight start.
Padres starter Paul Clemens (2-5) suffered the loss as he failed to complete five innings for the fourth time in eight starts as a Padre.
Hendricks (14-7) gave up one run – on Chris Carter’s 33rd homer – and five hits in six innings, and left with a 2.07 ERA.
“We needed to get those three guys to the mound before this game ended”, Farrell said.
“It’s impressive to have that long of a layoff without game action and he comes in and throws the number of strikes that he does”, Farrell said.
The Padres can clinch the series this evening while playing spoiler to the visiting Red Sox, who are trying to get closer to securing a coveted Wild Card playoff spot.
Bogaerts scored on Ramirez’s line drive to left to make it 4-1. On the following pitch Bradley smashed a two-run homer, which scored Sandy Leon who opened the inning with a bunt single.
Ryan Hanigan is 1-for-1. Richard threw five innings of one-run ball on September 1 against the Dodgers but didn’t factor into the win. But Buchholz struck out pinch-hitter Jon Jay and Travis Jankowski before being relieved by Matt Barnes to face Wil Myers.
