Tulo-led Blue Jays avoid ALDS elimination, beat Texas 5-1

Martin Perez will start for Texas against Marco Estrada. This was a quiet worry entering October, as the Blue Jays weren’t likely to face many low-quality pitchers in the postseason.

Their demise was brief but ominous.

All hands will be on deck Monday if the Blue Jays stay alive in their American League Division Series against the Texas Rangers.

The Blue Jays avoided a sweep Sunday night with a 5-1 win in Arlington.

292 with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs in 93 games, including the first two games of this series.

Who said it would be easy?

“It’s not relief yet”, he said.

Salvation and another game set to go Monday afternoon. They had scraped out two runs – one on a bases-loaded walk – and constructed long at-bats, an improvement on their work in the first two games. It looked like the Rangers might be able to get out of it still down just 2-0. “He’s been so good for us, arguably the best reliever in baseball the last three months, been up there with the best of them”.

Although Cecil initially thought he had only a cramp, he said the “pain took over” once the adrenaline wore off.

Estrada did what he nearly always does.

Now it was Dioner Navarro at the plate, the count went to 3-2 and the next pitch Navarro tagged but pulled foul by third base. I believe he overthought that one. He keeps hitters off balance. In the bottom of the third inning, Texas couldn’t do anything with a Hanser Alberto ground rule double with two outs. Aaron Loup came in to replace Estrada and got Rougned Odor to ground out to the shortstop, which allowed Andrus to score the Rangers first run. Estrada, who will take the ball Sunday with the Jays’ season on the line, had the second-best, second-half ERA among American League starters, trailing only David Price.

History was not on Toronto’s side going into Sunday’s game.

Gibbons was asked before the game what was wrong with Tulowitzki.

“He wasn’t getting hit around”.

That changed in Game 3. It is one that we can get to and we have gotten to it, and at times during the season when we’ve needed to win games or we’ve needed to make a move, to put ourself in position for post-season games.

This season, Dickey recorded his 100th career win, in his 100th start as a Blue Jay.

Both sides got off to slow starts in the first two innings, with each side going down 1-2-3 in the first and second innings. He gave up seven earned runs in 3.1 innings. Perez then intentionally walked Edwin Encarnacion and unintentionally walked Chris Colabello and Troy Tulowitzki, forcing in a run. Navarro doubled to open the inning and came home two batters later when Ryan Goins grounded into a double play.

Another big chance died in the next inning.

Delino DeShields and Beltre hit RBI singles to give Texas a 2-0 lead in the third.

Carter belted a one-out double in the fifth inning, singled and hit a first-pitch leadoff home run in the seventh off Royals left-hander Danny Duffy.

Estrada made 89 pitches, including 57 for strikes.

“Obviously we want Adrian in there”, Banister said. “He’s been huge. And he stepped up in a big way for us”.

The Lone Star State is enjoying a 2-0 lead in the series after dumping the Great White North, 6-4, on Friday at the Rogers Centre that has given them an important lead in the best-of-five ALDS. However, their three runs in Game 1 was not enough as they lost to the Texas Rangers, 5-3 and lost again on Game 2.

“I’m over it”, Martin said. “We’ve got to win regardless”.

“We haven’t ruled him out of (today’s) game”, Daniels said.
