After realising his horrendous mistake, Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach was then revealed as the correct victor. The apology could have been meant either for the rightful victor, the Philippines’ Pia Wurtzbach, or for Colombia’s Ariadna Gutierrez, who briefly wore the crown in error.
Harvey mistakenly named the wrong contestant as the victor.
#I don’t want to take away from this wonderful night and pageant.
“The first runner-up is Colombia”, he continued.
“I’m a little shocked”.
It was also a proud moment for Filipina beauty queens and past Miss Universe finalists Miriam Quiambao, Venus Raj, and Ariella Arida as Wurtzbach brought home the crown.
“I was watching Miss Universe with my family”.
Riek said none of the contestants had voted for Miss Philippines.
But there’s one person who can probably empathise.
Harvey’s gaffe led the world to believe for a few moments that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had won the pageant. COLOMBIA!!!!!!!”, roughly meaning, “You’ll forever be Miss Universe!
In the aftermath of Sunday’s shocking finale, Colombians were at a loss to explain the mistake.
The crown was removed from Aravelo’s head and placed on the mystified Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, the contestant from the Philippines.
Tension dominated the Planet Hollywood Resort Sunday after host Steve Harvey announced the wrong victor in the recently-concluded coronation of Miss Universe 2015.
Harvey wrote about the mistake on Twitter, saying, “I’d like to apologize wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. She looked spectacular. It was such a disappointment when the host said he’d made a mistake”, he said.
