Afeni Shakur died in California, after suffering possible cardiac arrest.

She was also an executive producer for the film “All Eyez on Me”, about her son’s life. The case went to trial in 1971, and a pregnant Shakur, lacking support from the national Panther Party, waived legal counsel and successfully defended herself, resulting in her acquittal on a staggering 156 criminal charges.

Afeni was a businesswoman, philanthropist, political activist and Black Panther. The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation was also responsible for the posthumous release of a lot of the rapper’s music. Police never caught the shooter. Interestingly enough, Tupac was born just a month later. Shakur Davis found the group sympathetic to the difficulties of her life as a poor, black woman in New York City: “They took my rage and channeled it”. His killing remains unsolved.
