Tupac Shakur’s Mother, Afeni Shakur Davis, Dies at 69

It is suspected that Davis went into cardiac arrest.

The news that the philanthropist, political activist and American businesswoman passed at her home on Monday night was confirmed by Marin County Sheriff’s Department in California to Channel 2 Action News.

Shakur Davis married a fellow activist, but struggled with drug addiction while raising her family in Baltimore and later, Marin County.

Born Alice Faye Williams in North Carolina, Davis was an active member of the Black Panther Party in NY as a young adult. She along with the others was charged with conspiracy.

Tupac Shakur died at 25 after a 1996 drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.

She said the charges were brought after the Panthers took over a school to make a point about continuing to educate children during a teacher’s strike in 1968. Then I remembered that I was in NY to attend a Mother’s Day event named after a song written about Afeni, Dear Mama.

Aside from the foundation, Afeni was also the founder and CEO of Amaru Entertainment, Inc., a record and film production company started in Atlanta, People Magazine reported.

Dina LaPolt, a California attorney who handled Tupac Shakur’s estate for almost 10 years, fought back tears as she described Shakur, who inspired the lawyer to open up her own firm in 2001.

She notably spoke alongside the mother of Biggie Smalls, her son’s rival, in a joint appearance at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards.

Shakur has been upholding Tupac’s legacy since his death.

“I miss interacting with that human being, that ideal being that excited, lovable, really magnificent spirit”.

“I just wrote it down, and it came out like tears”, Pac explained. The movie, which will be released in November, stars The Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira as Shakur.
