Turkey Announces Troop Withdrawal from Iraq
Turkey sent at least 150 troops into northern Iraq earlier this month saying they were to protect military trainers, but the Iraqi government said the latest move had been carried out without consultation and violated national sovereignty and global law.

The Turkish government says its soldiers in Iraq are on training missions with Sunni Arab groups and Kurdish Peshmerga fighters who are battling the Islamic State organisation.
U.S. President Barack Obama has urged Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to pull troops out of Iraq, amid a row that has split key members of the coalition fighting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).
US president appealed to Turkish counterpart to continue withdrawal to reduce tensions with Baghdad.
Turkey announced Saturday it would move its troops from Iraq after weeks of tensions over its military presence near the city of Mosul, according to a statement from the country’s Foreign Ministry.
Following a series of bilateral talks to alleviate Iraq’s concerns, Turkey rearranged the number of troops in Bashiqa and the additional security elements left the camp on December 14. The Iraqi government lodged a protest with the UN Security Council and demanded a complete and immediate withdrawal of Turkish troops.

A convoy of almost 10 vehicles left the Bashiqa Camp on Monday morning and traveled to another region in northern Iraq, Turkey’s Anatolia news agency said. “Because taking this issue to various global platforms would serve no other goal than to undermine the solidarity of the worldwide community against Daesh [the Arabic acronym for ISIL]”, Çevik told the council.
